Joining God, Remaking Church, Changing the World
By Alan Roxburgh
Chapter 2 Summary – “Reactions to the Unraveling (or “What Have We Done?”)
- Traditional churches have been unraveling since the ‘60s—they are not the center of society anymore.
- In response to this unraveling, churches looked inward for a fix, and have been experimenting with various ways to increase the church’s growth, health, and renewal, all to get back to their normative location at the center of society.
- By the 1990’s another generation was entering church life, who were not familiar with a time when the church was the center of culture.
- Within the last decade the Missional Church movement has become popular and is centered around a common desire to reframe the church’s identify for God’s mission. This mission isn’t just an element, program, or committee of the church, but its core identity.
- After more than fifty years of trying to fix the church, significant numbers of Christians are hearing the Spirit’s call to journey in a different way.
